Our hostel of the month this month is a new YHA property accommodating 280 guests - Railway Square YHA - which opened in Sydney on 16 July 2004.
Railway Square YHA, located at 8-10 Lee Street, Sydney NSW 2000, is a hip new YHA right in the hub of the backpacker precinct, Central Station. The YHA features a contemporary, urban design in a converted industrial space. The building was formerly the ‘Inwards Parcels Shed’ and incorporates a disused railway platform as an open living area. Some of the accommodation is even in railway carriages! The YHA has all the modern facilities expected by today’s traveller, including multi-share, twin and double rooms, a self-catering kitchen, communal areas to meet other travellers, an internet café, 24 hour access, a travel desk and an outdoor spa pool. Room prices range from 16 Euros per person per night to 52 Euros per twin room with ensuite.
This new YHA will be one of the world’s most unique hostels, joining other quirky properties such as the af Chapman YHA (a ship on Stockholm Harbour), the haunted Carbisdale Castle YHA in Scotland, Dublin YHA (a former convent), Nimbin Rox YHA (teepee tents) and Montara Lighthouse YHA in California.
