Andy U says: 'try looking at www.newkoyo.com. It's a budget hotel with very small rooms but it has all you need. I think it's only just over an hour from Narita if you get the train to Ueno'.

Hotel New Koyo is the cheapest hotel in Tokyo for travelers touring the country on a limited budget. We are located close to the centre of Tokyo, about five minutes from Ueno to Minowa station by subway (Hibiya line); from Minowa station it is a ten-minute walk to here. If you take a JR train, Minamisenju station is the closest to here: it is also about a ten-minute walk. Buses are also available from JR Nippori station to Namidabashi stop, then it's only a two-minute walk from the bus stop.

"A nice little place, with comfortable tatami mats and futon, but out of town. Not really a communal area in which to meet other travellers."

"Great place. Communal living room and kitchen. Very friendly owners with almost perfect English. You get to try on traditional Japanese outfits free of charge. Does have an 11.00 curfew though, and you must be out of the building between 10.30 and 4.00 which can get a bit annoying in the rain."
