Located on beautiful, tree-lined Victoria Street (which has some of the best cafes in town), the Original Backpackers' Lodge has a friendly, laid-back atmosphere without being a 'party hostel'.

With its big, sunny courtyard, 24-hour reception and lovely dorms and doubles, it's a popular place to catch some zeds.

It even has a guitar you can borrow - but we've been informed that renditions of Hotel California are strictly forbidden. You have been warned.

"This friendly and lively, atmospheric hostel, situated in Kings Cross is popular with both the old and younger crowds. It suits all types of people, whether you want to party with fellow backpackers after a meet-up in the courtyard or sit down in the snug warmth of the television room. Its friendly staff can be found inside, second door to the right of the building. The only downside I had with it was paying a deposit on the keys and the bedding, adding to a total cost of $40. Obviously the money will be paid back but it still leaves a big hole in the wallet for however long you chose to stay.

Apart from that, I had a brilliant time there with the use of its clean facilities and fully equipped kitchen. Other travellers were keen to get to know one another and never entered or left a room without a hello or goodbye. With its location not far from the Kings Cross train station and within walking distance from Sydney Opera House, it certainly is a convenient place to stay."
