Staying In Touch
Step 1 - Understanding what you need to sort out
As you trot off around the world you’re probably going to want to keep in touch with friends and family and also make / keep contact with new travelling friends, hostels, tours companies etc. on the road. Most travellers now use a mixture of the following:
- Email - Mobile phone / text - Instant messenger - Pay phone / landlines - Home-based cheap international call accounts - Travel journal / diary
You know what works best for you...and you also know what works best for your parents and your mates. When you’re travelling, most of this stays the same.
Things to think about
1. An international SIM card for your mobile In Australia if you use your mobile as your point of contact for work you'll need a local phone number
2. Get your parents / mates to set up a cheap international call account at home for cheap calls Founder of gapyear.com, Tom Griffiths, uses Planet Talk to talk to his brother in Australia at 5p / min
3. Make sure your mum & dad can pick up your emails / get a friend to do it for them and print them off
4. Setting up a travel journal where you write about what you’re up to and show your photos Friends and family can log in - saves you repeating yourself + gives them a visual of what you're up to
Mobile phone/textIf you are taking your own mobile, ensure you contact your provider to get international roaming turned on. If you are a contract user, make sure you sort out some way of getting your monthly bills paid.
