With the cultural diversity of Thailand we also recommend spending time travelling around the country and really soaking up the place. Party on the beach at the famous Full Moon Party, explore the bustling Khao San Road, visit the hill tribes of Chiang Mai, ride elephants through lush forests, visit tigers in a Buddhist temple in the Kanchanaburi province, learn to scuba dive or simply pick an island paradise and just chill. With so much to see and do, you’ll find it hard to cut your ties with Thailand...

There’s a whole section on gapyear.com dedicated to the ‘land of smiles’ including visa information, handy phrases, a comprehensive list of things to do, voluntary placements plus loads of tips and tales from backpackers that have gone before you. There’s also the chance to chat to other gappers about Thailand and to see whether any of them fancy meeting up for a beer when you all arrive!
