How I claimed my tax back

It's not a joke; real people have claimed real money from tax men across the globe! Now, there's obviously only so much that anybody wants to read about income tax, but please bear with us... We've put together a few stories ifrom people we know who've successfully reclaimed tax from 'the man' in case it inspires you to make the effort. It's honestly not as much of a pain in the ass as you'd think!

I'm about to head off to Australia, so I got in touch with 1st Contact to see if I might be due any tax back. I thought there might be a few quid in it for me - enough to pay for an extra snag or two on the barbie. I was amazed when I found out I was owed £1,850 - that's my flight, travel insurance, backpack, boots, WHV and a fair bit left over for beer! Everyone should at least check this out as it's free for them to check if you're owed money.

Quick, make tax sound interesting:
I worked from April to September saving money up to go and work in Africa for a few months. The work in Africa was voluntary, so I came back pretty poor. Imagine my delight when I found out I was owed money! What I did was to phone up the tax office, fill in a few forms, phone them up a few more times, fill in some forms again, correctly this time, then a few months later the money arrived! In hindsight, I wish I'd known 1st Contact existed because the Inland Revenue are very good at making things complicated.
